Five Bad Website Design Ideas

bad web designWeb design is art and there is a certain learning curve to it.  In order to have a good website you need to have many different elements and you website does have to be functional.  Below are five bad design ideas that you should never use in your websites:

Music That Loads Automatically

Oh my do I hate this with a passion.  9 times out 10 this annoys the crap out of the viewer and they leave because there is an obnoxious song playing in the background.  I know you love that new Taylor Swift song, but not everyone does.  Even more disturbing is there is no way to turn it off.  Believe it or not, just because you have a favorite song doesn’t mean you should put in on your website to start up.  Unless it is a band website I would HIGHLY recommend that you do not use an auto play for music when you design a website.

Only One Browser Compatible

I shouldn’t have to cover this, but I will.  Don’t ever design a website without testing it in all the major browsers.  All the major browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari.  Also you can actually go to a site at: http://browsershots.org/ which can check your website in hundreds of browsers.  It will show you them all in a thumbnail too.  Just please remember to make the website dynamic so that people can view it from any browser.

Your ALT Text Is Missing

One of the main things you will notice on an amateur site is they don’t use an ALT tags.  This shows that they really don’t care for their visitors and also doesn’t help their SEO.  Another thing to keep in mind is that Google and Yahoo absolutely love ALT text.  Don’t forget your ALT test please.

Pop ups Everywhere

Ok their is a difference between a popup for you newsletter or opt-in.  Do not litter the page with crap trying to sell people stuff.  Better yet don’t add these are you sure you want to leave, and all that fancy junk.  That stuff really just annoys the crap out of people.  The bottom line is don’t spam your viewers to death.

Bad Site Navigation

The most frustrating thing when going to a website is if you don’t know where to click.  9 times out of 10 people will just leave if your navigation is lacking.    Honestly, I have seen a lot of good websites, but if I can’t find what I am looking for I got about 15 seconds to make up my mind; is this site worth the trouble?

I had an college professor that used to tell me something all the time; just because you can do something doesn’t mean you NEED to.  What have you guys/girls seen as far as tacky web design.

These are some good tips. I hate when I got to a website and they have some annoying music playing. It is so unprofessional.

This is good in terms of google. Naught appears to irritate against it than that.Interestingly, this is exactly what was talked about several years ago at the hack con about search engines some number of years ago in 1995.

    Hi

Thanks for a very informative post presented in a light-hearted manner. I agree with all of your points on the subject of web design, and would like to add an opinion related to fonts and text.
It’s incredibly important, in my view, that websites do not use unusual fonts that are difficult to read – it simply turns people away. Also, it’s important to split the text up into sections (maybe with sub-headings) and not allow it to spread to wide across the screen. Both of these faults make it more difficult to read.

    Thanks.
